The European Commission has published its new sustainable textile strategy and opened it up for stakeholder review.
The purpose of the strategy is to transform textile products into a more durable, reusable, repairable, recyclable and energy-efficient.
The initiative will propose actions to make the textile ecosystem fit for the circular economy, addressing weaknesses regarding sustainable production, sustainable lifestyles, and presence of substances of concern.
The initiatives to come will look into supporting more sustainable lifestyles, for instance by incentivising ‘product as a service’ and other sustainable business models, and will promote voluntary approaches such as the EU Ecolabel.
The role of extended producer responsibility in promoting sustainable textiles and treatment of textile waste in accordance with the waste hierarchy will also be considered.
The consultation runs until 2 February.
