Information Commissioner’s Office Releases Self-Assessment Checklist

On 10 October, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s independent authority on information rights data privacy for individuals, released a self-assessment checklist with the aim of improving the understanding of data protection. This new checklist was created specifically for sole traders and self-employed individuals to assess their compliance with the new data protection laws and to ensure sole traders are securing personal data.

This checklist is an extension of the range of resources released to raise awareness on the new Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR within the sole trader and self-employed community. The checklist asses how compliant sole traders are via a rating based on responses given by the sole trader. It also provides practical suggestions and relevant guidance.

Created with sole traders and small business owners in mind, the checklist promotes the proper handling of personal data in sake of good business practices. In assessing compliance, small businesses will enhance their reputation, increase confidence and ensure security, saving both time and money in the long run.

The ICO, along with the Dutch, French and the Bavarian authorities are expected to be very active on smart appliances and data privacy. Guidelines should be expected within months.
